Alan Pauls ties together, in his own way, an instruction manual that gives an account of the most important works in Argentinian literature. But more than a collection of critical essays, The Borges Factor runs through the main concepts associated with this universe—originality, tradition, library—to not only map the core of Borges’ texts, but also the geometry of his identity. It is a quest as deep as it is relentless to find the image the writer projected during his lifetime and posthumously. And, of course, that perfect machinery that was ahead of its time and that transcends his own syntax.
Furthermore, what we never fully considered about Borges finds its own dimension in this book. Even his persistently quarrelsome nature, and those subtle yet significant strategies that Pauls interprets masterfully, including the seemingly coy act of pretending to be only one year younger to match exactly the birth of the century he lived in.
