At just eighteen years old, Carlitos Villaurrutia is killed by a stray bullet during a brawl that breaks out at his family's piracy stall. For his friend List, grief turns to horror when, months later, he receives an instant message from Carlitos. A message that should not exist. Thus, between dread and absurdity, List embarks on an investigation that is anything but professional to follow the trail of his dead friend's chats. A path of surreal clues, characters as ordinary as they are eccentric, and memories of a shared childhood.
At once a coming-of-age tale, a dark comedy, and an upside-down thriller, El amigo muerto (The Dead Friend) explores relationships that defy logic, unconfessed guilt, and the weight of that perpetual violence that, at times, can only be faced with an incredulous smile, in a country where even ghosts have unlimited data.
