Nacida en Polonia en 1891, fue la primera mujer en doctorarse en Filosofía en Alemania y perteneció al círculo íntimo de Edmund Husserl, padre de la Fenomenología. Temprana feminista, en 1921 su vida dio un vuelco místico y se convirtió al catolicismo para ingresar en la orden carmelita como Teresa Benedicta de la Cruz. Canceladas sus expectativas de emigración, fue detenida por la Gestapo en 1942 y deportada a Auschwitz, donde fue asesinada. En 1998 el papa Juan Pablo II la canoniza.

Edith Stein’s complicated personal journey took her from Judaism to agnosticism, philosophy and Catholicism, and ended in a Nazi concentration camp.

Born in Poland in 1891, Edith Stein was the first German woman to earn a doctorate in philosophy; a close confidante of Edmund Husserl, the father of Phenomenology; and an early feminist. In 1921, she became interested in mysticism and converted to Catholicism, joining the Carmelite Order as Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Unable to emigrate before the Second World War broke out, she was arrested by the Gestapo in 1942 and deported to Auschwitz, where she died in the gas chamber. In 1998, she was canonized by Pope John Paul II.

In this carefully researched book, Irene Chikiar Bauer delves into Stein’s autobiographical writings, philosophical and religious texts, and extensive correspondence to shed light on her circumstances and the existential questions that consumed her.
