In 1977, motorcyclist Thierry Sabine got lost in the Ténéré Desert. By a miracle, he survived and vowed to return to the desert, but never alone.
Two years later – whether out of bravery or by chance – he returned with a group of intrepid men and women who would become the first protagonists of the legendary Paris-Dakar Rally. The prospect of facing unknown challenges in the immensity of Africa proved irresistible, and the event was an immediate success. The greatest adventure of the twentieth century had begun.
These pages contain dozens of thrilling stories of daring feats. Sabine and his comrades faced unimaginable obstacles, surviving hunger, thirst and dust storms; breakdowns and accidents; theft, illness and kidnappings ... even an arranged marriage.
