Había llegado al límite. He was on the brink. He found himself in that moment in which pain—the worst pain, that which produces solitude of spirit—threatened to take him to the point of most terrible despair. What better proof could he have of God’s inexistence than this needless suffering? And if God existed, couldn’t he, in his solitude, talk to him?
