Overview
Clyde Doesn't Go Outside is a multi-layered picture book in which text and images support each other equally, yet tell different stories at the same time. Clyde the indoor cat stays by the window all day, overlooking the yard in which neighborhood animals (robin, turtle, bat anaconda?!) go about their business. The action is recounted in off-beat limericks that reflect the central uncertainty about whether Clyde is awake or asleep.
The exquisite computer-generated drawings are as elegant as the story is quirky, placing the title comfortably in categories of both childrens picture book and graphic novel. Embedded in the illustrations are the passage of four seasons and the duration of one day, giving Clyde its mixed atmosphere of wonder and humor.
