  • Overview

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Octavio Paz once wrote that in José Emilio Pacheco’s poetry, nature triumphs over culture—and in exalting it, he transfigures it, turning it into words.

Some see in Pacheco’s poetry an image of desolation, of time that has passed and will never return. It is that, but it is also the awareness of an unrepeatable moment: "A drop of rain trembled on the vine. / All night long it lingers in that dark moisture. / Suddenly, the moon illuminates."

Composed of fifty poems that freely explore the themes that obsessed Pacheco, Ciudad de la memoria (1986–1989) lets the fleeting—"roses / do not bloom: they blaze."—converse with the enduring—"Tomorrow / there will be no roses / but in memory / their fire will remain."
