  • Overview

This guidebook describes the 225km Walker's Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt, one of the finest of all Alpine treks. Designed to fit into a two-week holiday, the trek is described in 14 stages of 9 to 23km. The longest stage is 7.5 hours of walking but several days are around 4 hours, and there are options for fit trekkers to amalgamate some of the less demanding days or take longer route options. Mostly well signed and on good paths, the route requires no technical mountain skills or glacier crossings, though there are some exposed sections and a good level of fitness is needed.

This established guide to the popular trek has been updated to reflect changes to the route and improved waymarking. On the final stage it crosses the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge which has been created on the exciting Europaweg above the Mattertal. Every stage has its own special attributes, adding up to a walk of classic proportions.

The guidebook provides clear route descriptions and mapping for each stage of the trek, along with notes on travel, accommodation and preparing for the trek. A list of useful contacts, detailed bibliography, and a glossary are also included.
