Substantial literature has emerged on the subject of career planning, development, and management. Academic research by economists, educators, political scientists, psychologists, and sociologists has made the study of careers in organizations an important interdisciplinary focus in the social sciences. This proliferation of materials has resulted from a growing concern with such career issues as quality of life, job opportunities for minorities and women, economic downturns, career mobility, and the changing success ethic.
