A thread of red cashmere links the fates of three women, from China and Mongolia to Italy, leading to a perilous journey fueled by dreams and desperation.
In the kaleidoscope of colors that is China’s Ordos market, one shade stands out: the bright red of a cashmere sweater. Bolormaa wove it from the last of her wool before an exceptionally hot summer and frigid winter killed off her flock, forcing her and her family to abandon their nomadic life in the mountains.
Reluctantly, she sells the sweater to Alessandra, an Italian visitor who pays a small fortune for it and leaves her card, along with a promise of work in Italy. That brief encounter takes on enormous significance for Bolormaa and drives her search for a better life.
