Overview
The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most recognizable structures in the world and an engineering marvel. Construction began in 1933 and was completed in 1937. It faced many setbacks during the process. The book chronicles the building of the iconic bridge including how bridge builder, Joseph Strauss, found solutions for addressing the harsh environmental conditions to ensure the safety of travelers and shipping vessels. Factors such as water depth, height, span, bedrock stability, high winds, and the risk of earthquakes all had to be carefully considered. Also includes detailed and extraordinary efforts to ensure workers’ safety. Such precautions included netting to catch workers who fell while working and breathing equipment to protect workers from the harmful paint toxins were implemented. Featured in the book are archival photographs, chronology of events listing, additional reading and website recommendations, chapter notes, glossary, and index.
