Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
One of Federico García Lorca's essential theatrical pieces.
Federico García Lorca directed La Barraca, a pivotal theatrical experience for the Spanish stage. From 1918, when he published his first book, until his death, he never stopped composing poetry and writing plays. Austral presents in this volumeBlood Wedding an essential example of his dramatic work, where he constructs a tragedy filled with lyricism and symbolic elements based on a real event, a small newspaper article. He stages, in prose and verse, the foreboding chronicle of a passion, the struggle for a woman that leads two rivals to their deaths.
Fernando Lázaro Carreter, former director of the Royal Spanish Academy, analyzes in his Introduction the genesis of the tragedy and its place in Lorca’s work, revealing its symbolism and ultimate significance: “It is the woman who ties the thread of the tragedy: the men are mere counterpoints, external motives of the women’s passion".
