  • Overview

Billy’s Story: My Life as a Teenage POW has been drawn from a personal chronicle Billy Young wrote throughout the 1970s, and enriched by hundreds of conversations he and Lynette have shared over the course of a close friendship spanning more than twenty years. It is the only first-hand published account by an ordinary soldier imprisoned by the Japanese at the infamous Sandakan POW Camp, and one of only three books written by a survivor of the Kempeitai’s equally notorious Outram Road Gaol. Billy is now the last soldier alive from Sandakan, and the only Australian prisoner still living who endured Outram Road.

Lynette Silver contributes historical context gleaned from years of meticulous archival research, while Billy brings his extraordinary story to life with a vivid, personal narrative. Through the eyes of a rebellious teenage soldier, he shares his thoughts and experiences—some of which have never been revealed before, not even to his closest family.
