After reviewing the list of stolen or vandalized items—which included a stethoscope, a pair of old flannel trousers, a box of chocolates, a slashed backpack, and a diamond ring found in a bowl of soup—Poirot congratulated the headmistress, Mrs. Hubbard, for presenting him with a “unique and beautiful” case.

The list of stolen objects made no sense.

But if it was just a petty thief, why was everyone so frightened? Poirot wondered.
