Mabel Allington Royds (1874–1941) was born in Bedford. At age 15 she won a scholarship to London’s Royal Academy but opted to study at the Slade. She is famed for her colourful woodcuts of flowers, along with Biblical and Indian scenes, her technique was indebted to Japanese woodcuts.
