Overview
Einer der bedeutendsten romanischen Bauten im niederdeutschen Raum ist die ehemalige Stiftskirche St. Materniani et St. Nicolai in Bücken. Vom Bremer Erzbischof im 9. Jahrhundert gegründet, war der erste Kirchenbau und auch seine Erneuerung Mitte des 10. Jahrhunderts aus Holz, bis noch ein Jahrhundert später der erste steinerne Bau vollzogen wurde. Im Zuge der Säkularisation verfallen und teilweise abgetragen, wurde die Kirche im 19. Jahrhundert mitsamt neuer Ausmalung restauriert und erstrahlt seitdem in wiederhergestelltem Glanz. Noch aus romanischer Zeit, wenn auch aufwändig restauriert, stammen die Glasfenster im Chor, die denen der französischen Meister kaum nachstehen.
